Before we start with Hebrews, let me first give you some background. We don’t know exactly who the author is and even less where the people to whom the letter was addressed lived.
But we do know that these people were second-generation Christians struggling a little to hold onto their faith. Many of them were persecuted because of their faith. So, the aim of the letter is to encourage the young believers to keep believing amidst their suffering.
In the first verse the author tells us how God spoke in the times of the Old Testament. He spoke through patriarchs likes Moses, David, Isaiah and other prophets. And in different ways: through angels, dreams, visions, and sometimes even through a bush.
But the fact remains: God spoke. And God still speaks today. Listen to Chris’ story:
As you grow older, you also grow more forgetful. Bank account numbers and PIN numbers and policies disappear. So, I made myself a small black book with all the numbers and details. And then I lost it! I always kept it in the top drawer of my desk, but now it was gone!
I turned the whole house upside down. My office, the yard outside were searched, every safe turned out, but the little black book was gone. Disappeared between one breath and the next. Together with the letter opener I got from my father-in-law long ago.
Everybody looked for it. Mother, me, the children, even the grandkids, but it was nowhere to be found. The only ones who didn’t join in the search were my two fur babies who looked at us as if we had gone stir crazy!
Two months later I went to bed Saturday evening (21st of July) and that night something happened to me! The Father spoke to me in a dream and showed me exactly where my stuff was!
And as a bonus, simply because He is so good to me, He also showed me where I could find computer data for the assignment I was working on and didn’t know where to turn to because I did not have enough data!
I got up early Sunday morning and found the book and letter opener exactly where He had shown me, and needless to say, also all the necessary data on my computer.
Look, I’m a big man of 1,87m and 123kg, but I sat down right there in my office and started crying and thanking Him. Thank you because He is my God and Father. Thank you for all He does for me and gives me. Thank you for my health, but most of all thank you that He talked to ME and made ME feel so special! What an awesome feeling!
Our God lives, He is great and good! Amen.
God still speaks today. Maybe we have to become quiet and turn our ears towards Him.
Does God talk to you?
Do you hear Him?
Are you quiet enough?
Father, I know I’m too busy and make too little time to spend quietly with You. I know You still speak today. Maybe I should be cleaning the hearing aid on my side? Amen.
