In the 2006 movie, “Man of the Year”, Robin Williams quotes: “Politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed regularly and for the same reason.”
This is often true. Before being elected politicians promise their electorate the moon and the stars and the whole universe. Not long after being elected, the bunch of stars has gone missing and the moon doesn’t even rise anymore.
When I look at recent world leaders, I see quite a few bad apples. Most of them are there to see what they can score for themselves at the expense of the rest of the country.
But fortunately, these guys only rule over a piece of land. Fortunately, the Ruler of the universe is the complete opposite. Fortunately, the King of everything can only rule well and justly:
8 You’re God, and on the throne for good; your rule makes everything right.
I must confess I don’t always see Jesus as King. My picture of Jesus is the One who walked the dusty roads here on earth. I see Him stumbling along the Via Dolorosa. I see Him hanging bloody on the cross and dying, and indeed I see Him ascend to heaven, where He sits on the right hand of his Father.
I realise that the way I see God falls short and I see what Jesus looks like through God’s eyes. God sees Jesus as much more than my picture of Him. God sees Jesus as God and King who will rule for evermore. So different from our politicians who have to be replaced all the time…
To understand eternity, I need to tell the story of the small sparrow every now and then. A sparrow goes to sharpen his beak on Table Mountain once a year. The day that Table Mountain has been used up, one second of eternity has passed…
Jesus will always be at the control of the universe and He will always carry out his instruction good and right. Thank goodness for this, because we humans can’t even manage one planet in the universe well. Look at all the plastic in the sea. All the resources that humans exploit. Global warming. There are too many examples of how badly and wrongly we rule.
We must have the right view of Jesus. He is not just sitting on the right hand of God; He is King and Ruler too.
Maybe we should celebrate the “Feast of Christ the King” like the Roman Catholics. Pope Pius XI introduced this festival in 1925, amongst others to remind the governments and specifically the leaders Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin that there is only one sovereign King.
The world doesn’t know that Jesus is actually the King. Let’s go and show them.
Who’s your King?
Do you really worship Him?
Does the world see it in you?
O great King, Jesus, You are the beginning and the end. You are the Creator God, the One who keeps everything going. I worship You with my whole life. There is none like You! Amen.
